ECOFLOW Portable Power Station RIVER 2 MAX

For my Tentbox travels I realized that I would need something a little more beefy compared to the usual power banks, although small and convenient they are only usually good for a couple of charges so maybe last a day or so to boost your mobile or tablet.

After having a look around I wanted to balance cost vs utility, so I didnt want something super expensive that would last weeks I just needed something that would maybe do for 2-3 days at a time, enough to run my Alpicool G22 22L Compressor Car Fridge Freezer, and topping up mobile and tablet charges for the family. After looking at the main brands including Jackery, Bluetti and Ecoflow and weighing up the pros and cons decided to go for the ECOFLOW Portable Power Station RIVER 2 MAX, I have listed the Pros and Cons below.

Cost: £259 (Amazon: June 2025)

Pros

  • Multiple ways to charge, car, mains and solar

  • Charges from 0% to 100% by mains in around 1hr

  • Fairly small so easy to pack in the car

  • Light compared to the heavy duty power stations

  • 2 x plug sockets, 3 x USB, 1 x USB C and DC socket

  • Handy handle to carry it around

  • Display is helpful and shows current wattage use and how long the battery will last

  • X-boost allows you to use appliances up to 1000W (however I suggest not doing this if your away for a couple of days as it will just drain your battery)

  • Worked well with our compressor fridge as it only pulled power when needed to maintain the temperature and it was fairly low wattage

  • Good warranty

Cons

  • Not for continuous use with mid/higher wattage devices, I used this with our little 600 watt kettle to boil 800ml water and it would drain the battery by around 15-20%, so if I wanted to run a fridge alongside in addition to charging devices I think the battery would maybe last 1 day max

  • USB ports are slow charge, best off using the USB C port or the main plugs with a fast charger for mobiles and tablets unless you are happy to slow charge over night

  • Limited to max 2-3 days use with a compressor fridge plugged in 24/7

  • Even though the Ecoflow River 2 Max is fairly compact for the capacity it offers, its obviously not as light and portable as power banks, I would suggest taking both with you camping for convenience

My Conclusion

Its a great little power station and is fantastic for a weekend away. If your running a compressor fridge 24/7 from it, in addition to charging some low wattage devices you will need to boost with solar input or car charging, assuming you dont have access to mains charging if camping without electric hookup.

In my opinion this is well worth the money and will pay for itself within the next year or so, utilizing the solar charge by pairing this up with a good solar panel is also definitely worth doing.
